The European Capital of Culture opens the largest exhibition in South Estonia, “From Beast to Washing Machine”

“The Crafty Washing Machine” is a joint exhibition project of the Estonian Road Museum, the Estonian Agricultural Museum and the Tartu City Museum about invention, ingenuity, reuse and DIY, as part of the main programme of the Tartu 2024 European Capital of Culture.

The aim of the exhibition is to shed light on the hitherto under-researched and under-collected tradition of self-made craftsmanship and the incredible diversity of creativity and skills developed during the Soviet era (1945-1991).

The exhibition consists of three parts:

* “A fine washing machine: ingenuity on the road” at the Estonian Road Museum (Varbuse, Kanepi parish, Põlva county), curated by Rael Artel.

* “Beastly washing machine: ingenuity in the countryside” at the Estonian Agricultural Museum (Museum 4, Ülenurme, Tartu county), curated by Ilze Salnaja-Värv.

* “The Foolish Washing Machine: ingenuity in the city” at Tartu City Museum (Narva mnt 23, Tartu), curated by Madle Uibo and Meeli Väljaots.

“The three museums will offer a broad insight into the everyday but special tradition of clever DIY, which until now has been hidden away in garages, sheds, kitchens and apartments. These stories and objects speak of the quest for a better and more comfortable life that has evolved in cramped conditions,” commented Paavo Kroon, coordinator of the exhibition at the Estonian Road Museum.

“We want to show how everyday ingenuity can lead to a better life today and in the future. DIY is the foundation of all innovation. In the face of big and daunting problems, DIY is a tangible and rewarding solution that is within everyone’s reach,” added Kroon.
