Tartu opens the gate to the flavours of South Estonia.
The historic market building, with its outdoor stalls operating in the warmer months, plays an important role in representing the best products from South Estonia and its entrepreneurs. Local foodstuffs provide inspiration for Tartu restaurants also. The restaurant month called Tasty Tartu, held in February, provides an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the offerings of Tartu’s restaurants. In every August, the centre of the city is focused on food and wine during the Tartu Food and Wine Festival.
The people of Tartu hold good local food in high regard. Just look at the home cafés, which are becoming more and more popular each year as part of community events, or the container gardening frenzy in community gardens that is picking up more and more speed.
