Alatskivi Castle open-air performance starts on Friday

On Friday, the open-air production “The Right of the Night” will be performed in the courtyard of the Alatskivi Castle Driving Stables. Five actors and local folk dancers will perform an interpretation of Toomas Suuman’s original material under the direction of director Eili Neuhaus. The open-air production “Night is Right” premieres 19. July in the courtyard of the Alatskivi Castle Driving Stables.

According to Eili Neuhaus, she undertook this play as a great tribute to Toomas Suuman: “The choice of material was determined by the passing of a long-time colleague, Toomas Suuman. The performance is based on Toomas’ play “Last Night’s Justice” and is a kind of homage to an exceptionally talented creator.”

“A Night of Justice is a story of justice and right, of homeland and homelessness, of the right to live and to love, and of the freedom to be and to remain oneself. This is a story about men and for men. Men make plans, fight wars, pursue truth, justice and freedom. Yet men cannot do without women. Women often have a night when they sneak in and insist on their right – the right to be happy.

The performance will be produced in collaboration with Alatskivi Castle. “The castle as a landmark of the Baronial era fits perfectly with the theme of the play. The viewers will be able to see the inner contradictions of the gentry, which the country people perhaps could not capture very accurately even in manor times,” says Laura Lillepalu-Scott, the castle’s director. He also highlights a coincidence with the history of the castle: “When I was given the play to read, I was pleasantly surprised: the main character in the play is Heinrich von Linden. The eldest son of our castle owner, Baron Arved von Nolcken, who inherited the castle, was Heinrich Reinhold von Nolcken. Young Heinrichs, one on stage, the other in real life, over a century ago, who had to deal with their people and their wealth on a daily basis.”

On stage are Indrek Saar, Jaan Tristan Kolberg, Eduard Salmistu (Rakvere Theatre), Madis Mäeorg (Rakvere Theatre) and Maria Teresa Kalmet. Alatskivi folk dance group Kassikangas will perform.
Open-air performances take place in the courtyard of the Alatskivi Castle Driving Stables on 19. from 28 July to 28. until July.

Tickets are on sale on Piletilevi.
