Estonian Land Museum presents “The Beastly Washing Machine” at Tourest
Estonian Road Museum participates 8.-10. At the Tourest 2024 trade fair on 17 February, where it will present a sidecar motorbike created for the “The Peedist Washing Machine” part of the Tartu 2024 main programme.
“The Crafty Washing Machine” is a joint exhibition project of the Estonian Road Museum, the Estonian Agricultural Museum and the Tartu City Museum about invention, ingenuity, reuse and DIY, as part of the main programme of the Tartu 2024 European Capital of Culture.
The exhibition focuses on the creativity and skills that developed in an incredibly diverse way in the cramped conditions of the Soviet period. We hope that the tradition of imagination and DIY will continue to be an inspiration for solving today’s problems of abundance. A joint exhibition project of three museums opens on 24. April 2024.
In order to raise the visibility of the exhibition and to show the great possibilities of DIY, Üllar Meho, the restorer of the Road Museum, built a motorcycle with a special sidecar. The IZ 49 motorcycle. “The wheel itself is assembled from various motorcycle parts, and we mounted a sidecar to it, which was made from an old oil drum,” Meho said.
At Tourest, visitors will be able to see and try out this unique combination of history, art and ingenuity that is closely linked to Estonia’s cultural heritage.
